After a day of fluctuations, the Indian stock market managed to end on a positive note this Wednesday.
The Sensex Nifty closing reflected mild gains, buoyed by consistent domestic buying even as foreign investors continued to offload shares.
The BSE Sensex settled 116 points higher at 85,409, while the NSE Nifty added 35 points to close at 26,142, providing some relief in thin pre-holiday trading.
Sensex Nifty Closing: Index Performance Details
Out of 30 Sensex stocks, 13 advanced while 17 declined. On the Nifty side, 20 stocks ended in the green against 30 in the red.
IT and banking sectors faced pressure, dragging several heavyweights lower during the session.
Broader markets showed resilience, supported by ongoing institutional flows.
Domestic Investors Provide Strong Support
On December 23, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) net bought shares worth ₹3,812 crore, offsetting Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) selling of ₹1,795 crore.
In December till date, FIIs have been net sellers to the tune of over ₹22,000 crore, but DIIs countered with purchases exceeding ₹59,000 crore.
This pattern continued from November, where DII buying of ₹77,000 crore absorbed heavy FII outflows of ₹17,500 crore, helping stabilise the indices.
Previous Session: Market Ends Flat
The day before, on December 23, trading saw around 400 points of volatility, with Sensex closing 43 points down at 85,525 and Nifty marginally up 5 points at 26,177.
Declines in stocks like Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and Bharti Airtel weighed on the indices, while gains in ITC, UltraTech Cement, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles offered some cushion.
Sectorally, IT, pharma, and banking ended lower, whereas FMCG, media, and metal sectors closed higher.
Global Markets Show Mixed Trends
Asian indices traded mixed, with Korea’s Kospi down 0.21 percent to 4,108 and Japan’s Nikkei slipping 0.14 percent to 50,344.
Hang Seng in Hong Kong rose 0.17 percent to 25,818, and Shanghai Composite gained 0.53 percent to 3,940.
Overnight in the US on December 23, Dow Jones added 0.16 percent to 48,442, Nasdaq rose 0.57 percent, and S&P 500 climbed 0.46 percent.
